The Serve With Skirt Movement, an advocacy group observed a protest against the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management yesterday 16th January demanding the inclusion of skirts in NYSC uniform.

Some male folks participated in the protest which also had young ladies dressed in khaki skirts with placards on which it’s written “there is a difference between the world and the daughters of God” and “our sisters cannot dress like men”

The leader of the group, Udochi Emmanuel, while speaking to newsmen said that being harassed for wearing the skirts in NYSC orientation camps breached their fundamental human rights under Section 38(1) of the constitution of Nigeria.

She stated that wearing trousers has led to an increased level of immorality at the orientation camps. Udochi spoke further;

“We had our
mothers wearing skirts and we want to go back to that.
“We have
asked for exemption (sic) severally. NYSC has not given that as an option, they
have made it a compulsory one-year service for everyone below the age of 30 and
they are mandated to wear those clothes.
"We have
already started negotiations (with the government) and we hope that from this dialogue
we will get a favourable response.”

However, she said they will seek redress in court if they don’t get justice.

The House of Reps Committee on Public Accounts has issued a 30-days ultimatum to YABATECH to prepare and present its account details to the office of the Auditor General of the Federation.

Also, the committee said if YABATECH failed to comply with the order, the National Assembly would have no choice but to hold back the allocation to the institution for 2020.

Appearing before the committee to investigate refusal by partially-funded and non-treasury funded agencies, the Rector, Mr. Obafemi Omokungbe said he assumed office in 2018 and that these accounts are not ready as the external auditors are yet to submit the reports.

On the other hand, the committee members rejected Omokungbe’s submission and agreed to place YABATECH on status inquiry and further probe into its financial details.

Mr. Oluwole Oke, the Chairman of the Committee said;

“It is not going to be business as usual. Let me sound a note of warning to those heads of MDAs hiding under the pretext of being new in office or absence of governing boards to approve their audited accounts as a deliberate cover-up for not remitting their audited accounts to the Auditor General of the Federation as and when due.

 “We, as a committee, will fish out those involved and publish their names and their MDAs in the national dailies. We are compiling their names; there will be no hiding place for them. This is not a threat; we are going to carry it out to the letter.”
